Oak Class

Welcome to Oak Class

Mrs Owen is our class teachers, supported by Mrs Woodley.

I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer holidays and are looking forward to a brand-new school year.

PE

PE will be on Mondays and Wednesdays this term.

Homework:

Spellings

Each week, we will look at a different spelling pattern or rule in class.  The children will then be given some examples of this pattern/rule for them to explore on SpellShed at home.  If you notice that your child is struggling with a particular pattern, please write me a note in their Reading Record and I can then put in some additional support.

Times tables

Due to the mix of year groups last year the current Year 4s didn’t get to see how the current Year 5s prepared for The Multiplication Check, but I know that they are aware of it.  As we get closer to the time, I will send out information for parents and carers on how you can support them through this, but for now all the children need to do is focus on practising their times table facts.   As such, times table practice on TTRockStars will make up the second part of their homework.

In class, I use a number of methods to support the children in learning their times tables.  The main two tools are our Times Table Challenge (the sunflower challenge) and https://www.timestables.co.uk/multiplication-tables-check/ .  As we get closer to the summer term, I will encourage the children to switch from TTRockStars to this webpage as it gives a great example of what the active test will be like so I highly recommend that you check it out between now and then.

The sunflower Challenge is a timed quiz of around 15 to 20 levelled questions.    Each level of the challenge builds in a new multiplication (starting with the tens, and then the tens and fives and so on) as they become more fluent in their recall.  This way they are continuingly recalling previously learnt tables as well as learning a new one; not just focusing on a separate table in isolation.

Reading

In Destination Reader, we read from a class book for two days, in reading ability groups for two days and then practise our comprehension skills once a week.  This means that the children are spending approximately 40 minutes each day practising their reading and comprehension skills.

Each child will also receive their own reading book for home reading, which makes up the final part of their homework.  Please, try to hear your children read around three times a week.  If you could then record, into their reading record, the date and the pages that they have read.
