Learning and Curriculum
Our Aim
At Mendlesham Primary School, we provide an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum that is inclusive, representative and inspiring. Informed by evidence-based research, our curriculum is carefully designed to develop secure knowledge, skills and understanding while fostering curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning. We have high expectations for all pupils and provide meaningful learning experiences that help children become confident, well-rounded individuals who are prepared for the next stage of their education and life.
Curriculum Design
Our curriculum meets the full requirements of the National Curriculum while providing rich opportunities that deepen learning and broaden children's experiences. Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced from Reception to Year 6, ensuring that pupils build on prior learning and develop increasing expertise across all subjects.
Core subjects of English, reading and mathematics are taught daily. Pupils also study science, PE, PSHE, history, geography, art, computing, RE, music, French (KS2) and design technology. Subject leaders ensure that each curriculum area is well planned, engaging and ambitious, enabling all pupils to achieve and succeed.
English and Mathematics
We have carefully selected high-quality texts that broaden pupils' understanding of different cultures, experiences and perspectives. Our English curriculum develops confident readers, writers and communicators through a structured approach that includes Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, Destination Reader and Daily Supported Reader.
In mathematics, we use the White Rose approach to develop pupils' fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Through the NCETM Mastering Number programme, pupils develop a deep and secure understanding of number, enabling them to recall and apply key mathematical facts efficiently and build strong foundations for future learning. Pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking, make connections and apply their mathematical understanding in a range of contexts.
An Inclusive and Representative Curriculum
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils see themselves and others positively reflected within the curriculum. Regular review of curriculum content helps us ensure that learning is relevant, representative and ambitious. We continually evaluate the impact of our curriculum and welcome feedback from our school community.
Foundation Subjects
Our foundation subjects play a vital role in providing a broad and balanced education. Through geography, history, art, RE, music, PSHE, French, PE, design technology and computing, pupils develop knowledge, creativity, cultural understanding and the skills needed to become informed, active and responsible citizens. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure progression whilst fostering curiosity and a passion for learning.
Supporting Pupils with SEND
We are committed to ensuring that every child can access, participate in and succeed within our curriculum. High-quality, adaptive teaching is the foundation of our approach, supported by carefully planned provision where needed.
