Oracy

Helping children find their voice.

We want every child in our school to become a confident speaker and listener. Oracy means learning to talk well and listen carefully – skills that help children succeed in school and in life.

What are we doing?

  • Across all subjects: Teachers will include speaking and listening activities in every lesson, not just English. For example, explaining ideas in maths or debating in history.
  • Building vocabulary: Each subject will teach the right words for that subject, so children learn and use new language as they grow.
  • Clear progression: From Reception to Year 6, children will move from simple sentences and storytelling to giving presentations and debating confidently.
  • Celebrating diversity: We will use books, topics, and discussions that show different cultures and viewpoints, helping children understand the wider world.
  • Extra support: For children who start school with lower language skills, we will provide extra help through play, stories, and small group work.

Why is this important? Strong speaking and listening skills help children:

  • Learn better in every subject.
  • Express themselves clearly and confidently.
  • Prepare for future education and careers.

Together, we can help every child find their voice and aim high.
